Waltham Forest Council Of Mosques (WFCOM) condemn the hate crimes against our places of worship and faith institutions but will not be intimidated by the few ignorant individuals trying to cause division. We thank the police for acting swiftly and diligently.
Ignorance and racism are the root causes of this hatred and when it goes unchallenged those criminal minded become emboldened to make their twisted sentiments public. We are acutely aware of how far this can go too, with horrific attacks against Muslims in the past, so will not take this lightly and urge the authorities to tackle this as a priority.
The Government must address the increasing rise of violent far-right extremism targeting Muslim communities. More must be done to tackle Islamophobia and the disinformation that spreads hate.
We take comfort in the knowledge that, in the main, our community is wonderfully diverse, multicultural and cohesive. We have held open days and interfaith dialogue on many occasions. We relish the opportunity to engage with all faiths and positions to further our mutual understanding for the betterment of society.
As per the well-known maxim, ‘all that is required for evil to triumph is for good people to remain silent’. We will continue to pursue peace and justice and encourage all of our fellow citizens to join us in solidarity against the hate-mongers.
